The Poetry Center is housed within the Humanities Building at San Francisco State University. It traces its origins to nineteen fifty-four, when English professor Ruth Witt-Diamant founded the organization following a donation from poet W. H. Auden, who contributed a portion of his honorarium from a campus visit.
