Ruth Asawa’s “The Garden of Remembrance”

The Garden of Remembrance sits within a quiet courtyard at San Francisco State University, tucked between Burk Hall and the Fine Arts building. A series of ten large, weathered boulders are dispersed across a grassy area, intended to represent the different incarceration camps where over one hundred and twenty thousand people of Japanese ancestry were sent during the second world war. A bronze, scroll-shaped marker nearby lists the names of nineteen students who were forced to withdraw from the university in nineteen forty-two to enter these camps.
