Sigmund Stern Grove is a natural amphitheater framed by a dense canopy of tall eucalyptus trees. The bowl of the park sits below street level, shielded from the coastal winds and fog that frequently sweep across this part of San Francisco. It originated as a parcel of land homesteaded in the eighteen forties, eventually housing the Trocadero Roadhouse, a nineteenth-century resort where local history still includes tales of gambling and shootouts.
