Twin Peaks Tunnel - West Portal

The West Portal of the Twin Peaks Tunnel is defined by the tracks of the Muni Metro light rail, which disappear directly into the hillside here to provide a transit link beneath the city's central range. Opened in February nineteen eighteen, this two-mile-long tunnel was once the longest streetcar tunnel in the world. Its construction provided a direct path between the downtown core and the undeveloped western side of San Francisco, turning what were largely sand dunes and farms into the dense residential and commercial districts that sit here today.
