The one hundred and three foot tall concrete cross atop Mount Davidson stands as the highest point in San Francisco, rising above the eucalyptus trees that blanket the summit. It is a massive, fireproof structure anchored by thirty tons of reinforced steel and seven hundred and fifty cubic yards of concrete, designed to endure after its four wooden predecessors were repeatedly destroyed by arson or wind.
