Rocky Outcrop Park

landmark

Rocky Outcrop Park is defined by large, jagged masses of one hundred and forty-million-year-old Franciscan chert that rise directly out of the ground along Fourteenth Avenue. This natural area sits on a ridge in the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood, wedged between Grand View Park and Golden Gate Heights Park. Before the nineteen twenties, this entire ridge was largely undeveloped sand dunes. In nineteen twenty-four, a Danish immigrant named Carl Larsen, who owned extensive land tracts in the area, donated much of the property that now forms the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood to the city.
