Hidden Garden Steps

The Hidden Garden Steps consist of one hundred forty-eight ceramic-tiled stairs that climb the hillside along sixteenth Avenue, between Kirkham and Lawton streets. These steps are distinguished by their detailed mosaic artwork, which depicts a lush environment of native California flora and fauna including dragonflies, poppies, and snails. A prominent feature of the design is a large ceramic salamander that stretches across twenty-six of the steps, winding upward with the staircase.
