Monumental Reckoning

In the Music Concourse of Golden Gate Park, three hundred and fifty dark, four-foot-tall steel sculptures stand in a wide circle. These figures, created by artist Dana King, represent the kidnapped Africans who were forced aboard the slave ship San Juan Bautista in sixteen nineteen. They occupy the space around a solitary, empty stone plinth that once supported a statue of Francis Scott Key.
