Gadar Memorial

The Gadar Memorial at five Wood Street is a site linked to the Hindustan Gadar Party, a revolutionary movement founded in nineteen thirteen by Indian immigrants seeking to end British colonial rule. The organization established its headquarters in San Francisco to capitalize on the city's growing South Asian community and the presence of political leaders like Har Dayal. From this base, activists published a weekly newspaper titled Gadar, which means mutiny or revolution, to advocate for independence and organize support for an uprising against the British Empire.
