Archbishop's Mansion

The Archbishop's Mansion is defined by its French Second Empire style and a distinctive, steel-reinforced frame that helped it withstand the great earthquake of nineteen oh six. Located at one thousand Fulton Street, the mansion was built in nineteen oh four for Patrick William Riordan, the second Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco. Architect Frank Shea designed the residence with a three-story mahogany staircase topped by a stained-glass dome, intending the house to serve as a prominent home for the archbishop and a space for visiting clergy.
