Congregation Sherith Israel is identifiable by a large, prominent dome that rises one hundred and forty feet above California Street, visible from many parts of the city. Founded in eighteen fifty-one during the California Gold Rush, this Reform Jewish congregation is one of the oldest in the United States. The current sanctuary building, designed by architect Albert Pissis in a mix of Byzantine and Romanesque styles, was completed in nineteen oh five.
