Bush Street Temple

The Bush Street Temple is recognizable by the delicate Venetian tracery that screens the central loggia on its facade. Completed in eighteen ninety-five, the building was designed by architect Moses J. Lyon as a synagogue for Congregation Ohabai Shalome, whose name translates from Hebrew as Lovers of Peace. Its exterior features arches inspired by the Doge's Palace in Venice, and though the structure is built of redwood, the facade was originally painted in a trompe-l'oeil style to simulate marble.
