Compton's Cafeteria riot

The corner of Turk and Taylor Streets holds the site of Gene Compton’s Cafeteria, a restaurant that operated here from nineteen fifty-four to nineteen seventy-two. In the mid-nineteen sixties, this bright, twenty-four-hour diner was a rare public space where transgender women and drag queens gathered to socialize.
