United States Customhouse (San Francisco)

The United States Customhouse is a six-story building faced in pale granite, located at five hundred fifty-five Battery Street. Designed by the St. Louis firm Eames and Young in the Beaux Arts Classicism style, the structure is defined by its symmetrical facade and arched windows. It was built to facilitate the collection of duties and taxes, which provided nearly all federal revenue before the establishment of the national income tax.
