Dragon Gate San Francisco

historic

The Dragon Gate is a ceremonial archway marked by three separate portals topped with vibrant green tiles and curled dragon sculptures. Straddling Grant Avenue at the intersection of Bush Street, it functions as the official southern entrance to San Francisco's Chinatown. The structure rests on stone columns rather than the wooden supports often found in similar North American gateways. Dedicated on October eighteen, nineteen seventy, the gate represents a design by architect Clayton Lee, who worked alongside landscape architects Melvin H. Lee and Joseph Yee to model the structure after traditional village gates in China.
