The Hallidie Building is marked by a facade of glass panels that hangs like a skin in front of its steel and concrete frame. Completed in nineteen eighteen, the seven-story structure on Sutter Street was designed by the architect Willis Polk. He named it for Andrew Smith Hallidie, the inventor of the San Francisco cable car system.
