San Francisco City Hall is defined by a massive, copper-clad dome that rises three hundred and seven feet above the ground, making it forty-two feet taller than the dome of the United States Capitol. Completed in nineteen fifteen, the building was designed by architect Arthur Brown Junior in the Beaux-Arts style, a choice intended to project strength and civic renewal following the total destruction of the city's previous hall in the nineteen oh six earthquake and fire.
