The Painted Ladies

The seven Victorian houses on Steiner Street, known as the Seven Sisters or Postcard Row, are distinguished by their layered, multi-colored façades and Queen Anne architecture. Built between eighteen ninety-two and eighteen ninety-six by developer Matthew Kavanaugh, they sit in a row along the edge of the hill overlooking Alamo Square Park. These homes feature characteristic turrets, steep gables, and elaborate decorative trim that stand in sharp contrast to the modern city skyline rising behind them.
