The building at six thirty-five Ashbury Street is a four-story apartment house constructed in nineteen oh five. It stands out as a structure with a Victorian-era foundation that has persisted through more than a century of changes in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. During the nineteen sixties, this building served as a residence for the vocalist Janis Joplin. She lived in a second-floor apartment here while the surrounding streets became the epicenter of the counterculture movement. The building remains a multi-family property today, containing eight individual units.
