McLaren Lodge is recognizable by its heavy, rustic exterior walls built of eighteen-inch thick ashlar basalt masonry and sandstone quoins. Constructed in eighteen ninety-six, this building served as the official residence for John McLaren, the longtime superintendent of Golden Gate Park, who lived there for nearly five decades while overseeing the park's development.
