Lone Mountain Cemetery

In the middle of the nineteenth century, this area was known as San Francisco’s city of the dead. What began in eighteen fifty-four as a single burial ground eventually expanded into a complex of four major cemeteries covering three hundred and twenty acres. Known as the Big Four, they included Laurel Hill, Calvary, Masonic, and Odd Fellows cemeteries. These grounds were once filled with winding paths and park-like landscaping, and they became a popular destination for Sunday family picnics.
