The Presidio of San Francisco spans over four hundred acres at the edge of the Golden Gate, defined by its dense collection of hundreds of historic buildings, from rows of brick barracks to expansive warehouses and refined officers' quarters. Established by the Spanish in seventeen seventy-six, this site served as a military outpost for the Spanish Empire and the Mexican Republic before the United States Army took control in eighteen forty-six.
