Battery Godfrey

Battery Godfrey consists of the massive, weather-worn concrete gun emplacements embedded directly into the coastal bluffs of the Presidio. Completed in eighteen ninety-six, it was the first of the Endicott-era batteries finished in the defenses of San Francisco Bay. The structure was designed to hold three twelve-inch rifles mounted on barbette carriages, which allowed the crew to match the firing range of contemporary battleships from up to ten miles away.
