Fort Point National Historic Site

Fort Point is a massive, four-tiered brick fortress that sits directly beneath the southern span of the Golden Gate Bridge. Built between eighteen fifty-three and eighteen sixty-one, it remains the only Third System masonry fort constructed on the Pacific Coast. Its seven-foot-thick walls were designed to guard the entrance to San Francisco Bay during the Gold Rush, securing the wealth and strategic access of the harbor against potential foreign or Confederate warships.
