Battery Lancaster is a concrete coastal defense fortification featuring three gun emplacements that once held massive twelve-inch rifles. These guns were mounted on carriages designed to let the weapons drop behind a protective parapet, hidden from enemy view after firing. From nineteen hundred through the First World War, this installation provided the only artillery coverage from the southern shore for the narrowest part of the harbor entrance.
