San Francisco National Cemetery

The San Francisco National Cemetery is marked by rows of white headstones set on a slope that overlooks the San Francisco Bay. Established in eighteen eighty-four, this site was the first national cemetery created on the West Coast. It grew from a smaller military post burial ground, eventually receiving the remains of service members from abandoned frontier forts and camps across the Pacific region.
