Golden Gate National Recreation Area

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area features a rugged coastline and a history as a series of guarded military outposts. Congress established the recreation area in nineteen seventy-two to preserve natural and historic open spaces within a densely populated urban environment. It covers eighty-two thousand acres and includes locations ranging from the Marin Headlands down to San Francisco’s western shores.
