Battery Chamberlin

Battery Chamberlin features a massive fifty-ton six-inch rifle mounted on a disappearing carriage, positioned at the north end of the Baker Beach parking lot. This coastal defense site, completed in nineteen oh four, was engineered to protect underwater minefields outside the Golden Gate strait. The distinctive disappearing design allowed the gun to pop up above a concrete parapet to fire, then recoil back into a protected, hidden position for reloading.
