Public Health Service Hospital (San Francisco)

The Public Health Service Hospital is a seven-story, brick-faced building that sits along the southern edge of the Presidio, recognizable by its Classical Revival architecture and the terra cotta and limestone detailing on its facade. Originally established to provide care for merchant mariners, the hospital replaced an earlier eighteen seventy-five wood-frame facility on this same ground. The current structure was completed in nineteen thirty-two and operated for decades as a center for patient care and medical research before closing in nineteen eighty-one.
