The Society of California Pioneers occupies one of the historic brick barracks on the Main Post of the Presidio. This organization, the oldest historical society west of the Mississippi, began in August eighteen fifty when a group of men gathered at Delmonico's Saloon on Montgomery Street. They had just learned of the death of President Zachary Taylor and resolved to march in his funeral procession as a unified body of pioneers.
