Presidio

The Presidio is recognizable by its dense, man-made forest that rises sharply against the city’s urban grid. Spanning fifteen hundred acres at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, this former military post has transitioned from a fortified outpost into a public landscape. It began in seventeen seventy-six as a Spanish military fort, serving as the northernmost point of their empire in North America before passing through Mexican control and finally into the hands of the United States Army in eighteen forty-six.
