Battery Howe-Wagner

Battery Howe-Wagner appears as a large, earthen hill, its structures largely hidden beneath heavy vegetation. Completed in eighteen ninety-five, this battery was a component of the coastal defense system at Fort Winfield Scott, designed to shield the San Francisco Bay from enemy warships. It was originally named Battery Howe, after Colonel Albion P. Howe, a veteran of the Mexican-American and Civil Wars.
