The Palace of Fine Arts is marked by a massive rotunda and sweeping, roofless colonnades that frame a quiet, artificial lagoon. Built for the nineteen fifteen Panama-Pacific International Exposition, this structure was designed by architect Bernard Maybeck to appear as a crumbling Roman and Ancient Greek ruin. While the rest of the exposition grounds were demolished to create what is now the Marina District, this palace survived through the efforts of the Palace Preservation League, founded by Phoebe Apperson Hearst.
