San Francisco National Cemetery

The San Francisco National Cemetery is defined by rows of white headstones set against the backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific coast. Established in eighteen eighty-four, it was the first official national cemetery on the West Coast. The site began as a small post cemetery for the Presidio, but it soon grew to receive the remains of service members from abandoned military forts and camps across the American frontier.
