Congregation Emanu-El is defined by its massive central dome, which rises one hundred and fifty feet above Lake Street and Arguello Boulevard. Completed in nineteen twenty-six, the building was designed by architect Arthur Brown Junior, whose work also includes San Francisco City Hall. Its architecture draws clear inspiration from the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, a choice intended to give the congregation a permanent and imposing presence in the city.
