Battery McKinnon-Stotsenburg (1898)

Battery McKinnon-Stotsenburg consists of massive concrete mortar pits that once held heavy artillery designed to protect the San Francisco Bay. Completed in eighteen ninety-eight, the site originally functioned as a single fortification known as Battery Stotsenburg. It featured four pits equipped with sixteen twelve-inch mortars capable of firing one-thousand-forty-pound projectiles up to eight miles. These weapons possessed a full three-hundred-sixty-degree field of fire, allowing them to target both approaching enemy warships and potential land-based threats.
