U.S. Merchant Marine Hospital Cemetery

The Marine Cemetery Vista marks the site of a lost burial ground for hundreds of merchant mariners who died at the former United States Marine Hospital between eighteen eighty-one and nineteen twelve. These sailors, arriving in San Francisco from forty-three different countries, were often too poor to afford a private burial or lacked families to claim them. Because the hospital fell outside of city limits, it maintained this small cemetery for decades until the site eventually fell into neglect.
