Western Neighborhoods Project

The Western Neighborhoods Project, headquartered on Balboa Street, operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the history of San Francisco’s west side. Founded in nineteen ninety-nine, the group preserves the stories of neighborhoods like the Richmond and Sunset, which were once collectively known as the Outside Lands. While these districts remained largely undeveloped sand dunes through the eighteen seventies, the organization works to document their transformation into the dense, residential grid seen today.
