Golden Gate Park Museum

The de Young Museum is recognizable by its exterior of dimpled copper panels and a twisting, one-hundred-forty-four-foot observation tower that rises above the park’s tree line. This institution began in eighteen ninety-five, following the California Midwinter International Exposition held in Golden Gate Park the previous year. Michael H. de Young, a San Francisco newspaper publisher who chaired the exposition committee, championed the museum to house six thousand objects left over from the world's fair.
