Portals of the Past

Six white marble columns stand on the shore of Lloyd Lake, framing only the sky and the trees behind them. This structure, known as Portals of the Past, was once the grand entrance to the Nob Hill mansion of railroad executive Alban Towne. Built in eighteen ninety-one, the home was one of the thousands of buildings lost when fire swept through San Francisco after the nineteen oh six earthquake.
