The World War I Memorial in Golden Gate Park is set within a fifteen-acre area known as Heroes Grove, characterized by a collection of towering redwood trees. Originally dedicated on May thirtieth, nineteen nineteen, three days after Memorial Day, the grove was established to honor the men and women of San Francisco who served and died in the Great War. Thousands of people gathered for that first dedication, where mourners created a display of flowers and wreaths.
