Battery Saffold (1895)

Battery Saffold sits as a sprawling concrete fortification along the Presidio's rugged western bluffs. Built as part of the Endicott-era coastal defense system, the battery was completed in eighteen ninety-five to protect the harbor against hostile warships. It was named for Captain Marion M. Saffold, who served with the thirteenth infantry and died in action at Cavite in the Philippine Islands in eighteen ninety-nine.
