Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic

The Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic at five hundred fifty-eight Clayton Street is marked by its history as the first clinic of its kind in the United States. Established on June seventh, nineteen sixty-seven, at the height of the Summer of Love, the clinic opened its doors in response to the thousands of young people arriving in the neighborhood who lacked access to traditional medical care. Its founder, Doctor David E. Smith, sought to provide services that were free of charge, free of red tape, and free of judgment.
