The Castro Theatre

The Castro Theatre is easily recognized by its towering, ornate blade sign that rises high above the sidewalk, glowing with neon lights that have defined this corner for nearly a century. Built in nineteen twenty-two, this movie palace was designed by the architect Timothy Pflueger as the centerpiece of a small theater circuit owned by the Nasser family. Its facade blends Spanish Colonial and Beaux-Arts styles, while the interior features a vibrant mix of architectural influences, including a ceiling that mimics a draped, fabric tent.
