Union Square

Union Square is defined by the eighty-five-foot tall Dewey Monument, a granite column topped by a bronze statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. This public plaza covers two point six acres in downtown San Francisco, bounded by Geary, Powell, Post, and Stockton Streets. While the site was reserved as a park in the city's eighteen forty-seven street plan, it did not receive its name until the American Civil War, when it hosted frequent rallies held in support of the Union Army.
