Cable Car Turnaround Powell St.

The Powell Street cable car turnaround consists of a large, revolving wooden platform set into the pavement at the intersection of Powell and Market streets. This circular turntable allows the city's single-ended cable cars to physically rotate before they begin their return trip up the steep hills. Operators leave the cars at the end of the line to manually push the turntable, swinging the wooden vehicle until it faces the opposite direction.
