Spreckels mansion

The Spreckels Mansion is defined by its grand French Baroque limestone facade and the massive, thick hedge that now guards its perimeter. Located on Washington Street, this structure was completed in nineteen twelve as a private residence for sugar tycoon Adolph B. Spreckels and his wife, Alma de Bretteville Spreckels. To create the site for what became known as the Sugar Palace, the couple purchased several adjacent lots and arranged for eight existing Victorian houses to be moved to new locations in the neighborhood.
