The McElroy Octagon House is a rare, eight-sided structure standing at the corner of Gough and Union Streets. Built in eighteen sixty-one by wood miller William C. McElroy, the home reflects a brief mid-nineteenth-century trend inspired by the writer Orson Squire Fowler, who argued that an octagonal shape maximized sunlight and improved air circulation for its inhabitants.
