The Alma is an eighteen ninety-one scow schooner, a flat-bottomed vessel recognizable by her shallow hull designed to rest safely on the mudflats at low tide. She was built by Fred Siemer at his shipyard in the Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco. Siemer constructed the boat for his son-in-law, James Peterson, and named her for Peterson’s daughter.
