Russian Hill-Macondray Lane Historic District

The Russian Hill-Macondray Lane Historic District is a narrow, pedestrian-only passage defined by its dense canopy of trees and a mix of wooden cottages that feel detached from the surrounding city. While much of Russian Hill was transformed by post-earthquake apartment construction, this small enclave retains a quiet, garden-filled scale. The lane functions as a public right-of-way, following a steep grade that drops toward the bay, with brick, asphalt, and cobblestone surfaces often giving way to wooden stairs at its Taylor Street end.
